In the airline industry, on-time delivery is not just desirable – it is absolutely necessary. And for a low-cost airline, this is critical. That’s why last week’s news that IndiGo is dealing with a wave of flight delays should be a serious concern for India’s largest airline by market share.
Monthly data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation shows that over the past six months, IndiGo has lagged behind key rivals Vistara, AirAsia and Air India in punctuality. This comes after an excellent showing in 2021 when it was the most punctual airline in India in 10 out of 12 months. Worse, the decline over the past six months has been particularly steep, from 95.4 percent on-time performance in February of this year to 84.1 percent in September.
